Some PSV workers on strike

Some public service vehicle (PSV) workers are on strike.

The decision to park their buses was organised by the Public Sector Vehicle Workers Association. Only a few buses are in the Cheapside Terminal, and drivers say this will be their last trip.

They are protesting the conditions of the terminals, including inadequate bathroom facilities, especially at Cheapside; the high cost of diesel, the cashless system and the Transport Authority’s suspending of PSV workers without due process.

The strike, however, has not gained the support of the Alliance Owners of Public Transport.

Chairman Roy Raphael acknowledged there are issues within the sector which need to be addressed, but said this was not the way.

He called it a wildcat strike, and said the owners of the vehicles have not sanctioned the action, and they only received notice via a voice note this morning.

Raphael said he was trying to organise a meeting with the Ministry of Transport and Works to address some of the issues.  (Nation News)
