The Chapman Challenge was launched today to much fanfare, with thousands of schoolchildren, along with educators, dignitaries, business leaders and members of Government, filling the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium in Wildey, St Michael.
The Chapman Challenge is the brainchild of President of Barbados, The Most Honourable Jeffrey Bostic, under the charity The President’s Trust.
Bostic says his dream is to elevate all of the participants from their respective “lanes” – where they came from – to “Hillaby”, the highest point in Barbados, representing their best, most successful selves. He expressed he was heartened by the turnout – 3 200 youth, including 70 special needs children.
The President says everyone started in a “lane”, but did not have to stay there. He says the challenge is geared to bridge that gap between the lane and Hillaby.
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley described the launch as a moment of truth and commended the President for the initiative, adding it wis evidence the youth of the nation are loved.
The Chapman Challenge is a youth development programme for those aged ten to 24. It is built around five core pillars – mentorship, leadership, community service, global citizenship and health and wellness, as well as three levels – explorer, builder and leader. There are also challengers who are taking a course and mentors guiding them.
