Inniss: Middle class now working poor

Former Member of Parliament for St James South Donville Inniss says the middle class in Barbados is feeling the squeeze of the increased cost of living and some have been reduced to the status of “working poor”.

Inniss, who held several portfolios in Democratic Labour Party (DLP) administrations, was speaking on Starcom Network’s Brass Tacks Sunday yesterday where the cost of living took centre stage.

The discussion, led by moderator Jamal Slocombe, also included Minister of Energy, Business Development and Commerce Affairs Kerrie Symmonds, attorney and activist Tricia Watson, and Opposition Senator Karina Goodridge, president of the Friends of Democracy. The DLP declined to send a representative and Inniss said he was not speaking on behalf of the party.

“I once represented a predominantly middle-class constituency and I can tell you because I still live there and move around, they are now basically the working poor. They feel under siege as they face the increased fuel costs, increased health care costs. Another issue we don’t want to talk about is the fact that because of concerns about our education system, more and more so-called middle-class Barbadians are shifting towards private education,” Inniss said, adding this included extra lessons.
