Mother forfeits $50 000

She lost one son six years ago and the other one, who was recently convicted of that son’s death, caused her to lose $50 000 yesterday.

This was the fate that befell the mother of convicted murderer Jason Ricardo Layne when she reappeared in the No. 3 Supreme Court.

It was last Wednesday that Layne, of Leadvale, Christ Church, was found guilty, in his absence, of murdering his brother Anthony “Bubba” Layne on June 4, 2020.

He allegedly left the island more than a week before after a third co-accused had thrown in the towel and pleaded guilty to the offence.

Justice Carlisle Greaves had issued a warrant for Jason Layne’s arrest and summoned the surety, his mother, to court.

She had told the court she spoke to her son and he told her he was “doing a short run”. She said she knew her son usually made such trips to buy produce for his business.

Yesterday, the judge ordered the woman, who was represented by Senior Counsel Andrew Pilgrim, to forfeit the entire sum she had signed as bail.

The money is held in an account at a credit union and Justice Greaves ordered the credit union to make the cheque payable to the Registrar. The cheque must be paid by November 10.

During the trial, Layne was represented by attorneys Lesley Cargill-Straker and Kristin Vanderpool, while Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Krystal Delaney, Senior State Counsel Anastacia McMeo-Boyce and State Counsel Kwame Ramsay prosecuted.

Justice Greaves has ordered a pre-sentencing report as requested by Layne’s defence and adjourned the matter until December 4. A warrant remains out for his arrest.
