Below is the full statement
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Peta Alleyne. She gave so much of herself to Barbados, and for those of us who were still working alongside her, this loss is especially hard to take in.
Peta was still working with us on My Voice, My Barbados, helping to get the programme right. She gave her time to online sessions with schools, talking teachers and students through what was needed and helping them prepare.
There was something very special about a woman whose own voice had become so familiar to Barbadians helping young people find confidence in theirs.
For decades, Peta helped us recognise the value in our own stories. Through Laff-it-Off, CBC and her work in film, she brought our humour, our language and our familiar ways to life. Her wit made us laugh. Her attention to a pause, an expression or a change of tone showed just how much care she put into her craft.
Our cultural community has lost someone very dear to us. We, as a country, are grateful for the joy she brought into our lives and for the time and knowledge she shared with others. We will continue to be inspired by her example as we encourage the next generation of Barbadian talent.
On behalf of the Division of Youth and Culture, I extend heartfelt condolences to her son, Ade, her family and loved ones, her CBC and Laff-it-Off families, and everyone in our film, theatre and broadcasting community who is grieving her loss.
Thank you, Peta, for all you gave to Barbados, and for helping others discover what they, too, could give. May you rest in peace.”
