Gems keep hopes alive

by KENMORE BYNOE

With the Bajan Gems’ hopes of reaching the 2027 Netball World Cup finals almost evaporated, the hosts saved some face by scoring a battling 51-40 win over Canada when the Netball World Cup Sydney 2027 Regional Qualifiers entered the penultimate day on Sunday at the Wildey Gymnasium.

Buoyed by a large, vociferous crowd in the gym and overcoming a frenetic first half, Barbados battled for scores of 13-12, 21-22 and 35-22.

That critical victory allowed the Gems to retain a tenuous chance of edging out St Vincent and the Grenadines for a spot behind Trinidad and Tobago as the two teams heading to Sydney, Australia.

Barbados started with shooters Kadeen Corbin and six-footer Damia Walrond, circle defenders captain Shonette Azore-Bruce and Dei Padmore with Azaria Alleyne playing centre, Brianna Holder running wing attack and Salisha Auguste at wing defence.
