Barbadian service providers will remain locked out of foreign markets unless they raise their standards at home, Minister of Energy, Business Development and Commerce Kerrie Symmonds has warned.
He spoke yesterday at the launch of the Barbados Coalition of Service Industries’ (BCSI) National Standards Development Project at the Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business & Management, UWI Cave Hill, St Michael.
Addressing the opening of the workshop, Symmonds said Barbados could not expect to sell its services overseas without meeting the benchmarks other countries set.
“In order to penetrate the foreign market, you have to be able to meet the standards which they set as the non-tariff barrier to your trade,” he said. “It is better for us to raise our game at home and then be able to export the service overseas.”
The workshop, organised in partnership with the TVET Council and the Employers’ Confederation, aimed to improve draft instrument questions, test how they work and agree on the evidence and pilot actions for each sector. The sectors included real estate and valuers, event technical services, construction professionals, beauty professionals and architects and craftsmen.
