Ex-National player Shakira Shorey passes away

Former national basketball and Physical education teacher, Shakira Shorey, has died after a long battle with cervical cancer.

Shorey, 39, who was also the second vice-president of the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association (BABA), a former netball and basketball senior manager and coach, passed away early this morning.

In a Facebook post, the BABA extended heartfelt condolences to her daughter Sariah and the extended family and friends.

“Shakira was an integral part of the association in her various administrative roles, as a player and game official. She will be missed unconditionally,” the association added.

The former student of The Lester Vaughan School was diagnosed with stage four cervical cancer in June 2015 at age 30. In 2017, Shorey’s cancer went into remission for a few years before returning even more aggressively. As a result, a Go Fund Me page was created to assist the mother of one with the high cost of treatment overseas. Up until her untimely passing, the fund had accumulated $18 577.

In her Go Fund Me introduction, Shorey credited her daughter for being the motivation she needed through it all.

“Cancer is a disease I would not wish upon anyone,” she said.

As a mark of respect, the games in the BABA Co-operators General Premier League scheduled for tonight and tomorrow have been postponed. (PR/KNB)
