School boy sustains serious head injuries after bullying incident

The Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training is appealing to students to stop β€œthe pockets of violence rearing its head among the school population.”

This comes after a schoolboy was injured on Tuesday evening in the vicinity of Six Roads, St Philip.

According to a release from the Ministry, efforts by the fifth-form student to intervene in an apparent case of bullying resulted in his sustaining a serious head injury.

He was treated at the nearby polyclinic, but subsequent complications led to his being transported by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he is still being monitored.

The incident happened off campus around 2 p.m., sometime after students had been dismissed early for the day due to the negative impact of smoke emanating from a nearby location.

The police, principal and other school administrators went to the scene, where two male students were identified as the attackers.

The release said the Ministry would provide the space for the principal, the Board of Management, and the Barbados Police Service to continue investigations, and make the appropriate decision with regards to the fate of the two male students.

The school was not named in the release, but on Tuesday, Princess Margaret Secondary School closed early because of smoke in the area. Classes resumed on Wednesday. (PR/SAT)
