A closer look at the Anonymity Bill

When brought into force, Barbados’ Criminal Proceedings (Witness Anonymity) Bill, 2025, will allow courts to protect a witness’ identity under specific conditions. Here’s how it works:

• Voice Modulation: Witnesses may testify using technology that alters their voice to prevent recognition.

• Pseudonyms Allowed: Witnesses can use false names in court documents and testimony.

• Video/Live Link: Testimony can be given via video from a separate location outside the courtroom.

• Screens in Court: Physical barriers can be placed so the witness is not seen by the defendant or public.

• Redacted Statements: Personal information (name, address, contact info) can be removed from written evidence.

• Judge-Only Disclosure: Real identity is known only to the judge and authorised parties, not the defence or jury.

This law focuses on anonymity within court proceedings. It does not provide for relocation, safe housing, new identities, or physical protection beyond the courtroom.
