News that his mother had been struck and was crying in her bedroom drove 27-year-old Hakeem Jared Bostic into a fit of rage — and straight into trouble with the law.
The general worker from No. 13 Reece Land, Flagstaff, St Michael, appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to charges stemming from an incident on September 16.
Bostic admitted that while in control of a motor vehicle, he drove in a wanton and furious manner, causing bodily harm to Desmond Wharton, Neisha King, and Jason Durant.
He also pleaded guilty to damaging a motor vehicle belonging to Toni Bayley, and another vehicle owned by the State, either intentionally or recklessly, on the same day.
According to the prosecutor, Sergeant Kenmore Phillips, police were responding to a domestic violence report when they encountered Bostic along Garrison Road. As officers parked at the residence, Bostic pulled into the driveway.
Moments later, he allegedly accelerated towards Wharton, sparking the sequence of events that led to the charges.
“I completely blew my cool,” Bostic admitted when asked if he had anything to say. “I wish I could take it back now. It was me, not thinking. My mother was in the bedroom crying because I was told she had been struck.”
Describing his actions as “foolhardy”, Magistrate Irene Stephney sternly warned the first-time offender that his actions could have led to far graver consequences.
“You cannot take matters into your own hands. Call the police — that is why they are there,” she said.
The matter was adjourned until September 26, as the court is awaiting damage estimates from investigators.
Bostic was released on $7 000 bail, which he secured with one surety.
