Annual kettle appeal to ‘lend helping hand’ to hurricane-hit Jamaica

Barbadians are being urged to give generously this season as the Salvation Army launches its Christmas Kettle Appeal — with a special focus on aiding Jamaica’s recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Melissa.

In a call for compassion extending beyond Barbados’ shores as the familiar red kettle appeared at Golden Square Freedom Park on Friday, marking the start of the island’s giving season, the church announced that Saturday will be observed as Jamaica Relief Day.

This year’s fundraising goal stands at $850 000.

During the ceremony, Divisional Commander for Barbados and Saint Lucia, Major Robert Pyle, revealed that all funds raised across Barbados and Saint Lucia on that day will be donated to Jamaica to support recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

“Throughout Barbados and Saint Lucia, all funds raised at our designated locations will be donated to Jamaica for its recovery and response efforts,” he said. “We urge the public and friends of the Army to lend a helping hand so that others can be blessed.”

The theme of this year’s campaign — Lend a Helping Hand — has taken on deeper meaning in light of the regional appeal. “At times, to lift a family, a man, a woman, a boy, a girl requires many hands working together,” Major Pyle said. “The need is great, the work is demanding, but it is necessary.” He encouraged Barbadians to continue supporting both the Christmas appeal and the relief effort, reminding them that the Salvation Army’s mission extends far beyond local borders.

Echoing the call for generosity, the chairman of the Salvation Army advisory board, Paul Bernstein, said: “This event is very, very important. It is responsible for at least 80 per cent of our income for an entire year, and we need the public of Barbados to be aware that the collecting of these kettles and the mail appeal is very, very important.”

From January to September, the Salvation Army distributed food hampers to over 1 000 families, clothing and furniture to more than 12 000 people, and served over 36 000 meals, Bernstein disclosed.

President Sandra Mason, who has supported the organisation for 50 years, praised the Army’s consistent transparency and compassion. “I could almost swear that the money the Salvation Army manages to accumulate does not go into anybody’s pocket,” she said. “It is so evident that the money raised is given to the worthy causes you promote.”

Scotiabank, the title sponsor for seven decades, reaffirmed its long-standing partnership. “This campaign is not just about fundraising, it’s about hope,” said Carla Boyce, the manager of premium relationship banking. “It’s about ensuring that families facing hardship can sit down to a warm meal and that those struggling with homelessness or unemployment know they are not alone.”

Major Paula Pyle expressed thanks to the National Cultural Foundation, Sandy Lane Charitable Trust, Trident Entertainment Inc., Red Advertising and Marketing Ltd, Advertising Aids Ltd, and the Barbados Police Service Band for their continued support.
