The Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT) appears to be standing alone in its intention to have its members stop working certain routes after 6 p.m. come August.
On Friday AOPT chairman Roy Raphael disclosed during the launch of the “Zippy” taxi they had decided to implement measures due to the significant rise in crime over the past few months. From August 1, operators who are members of their association will not be picking up persons on the side of the road. The Zippy taxi car is 100 per cent electric new taxi cars added to the public transportation sector that aligns with Government’s policy on a more energy-efficient Barbados.
However, response has been swift, with both the Association of Public Transport (APTO) and the PSV (public service vehicle) Workers Association (PSVWA) distancing themselves from the proposed action.
A press release, signed by APTO chairman Anwar Nana and PSVWA chairman David Doughlin, said while both associations were “deeply concerned” about crime, removing their members from the roads was not the answer.
“We acknowledge the efforts of the authorities to address and bring the situation under control, and we would like to clarify that we have not issued any directives for drivers to stop work early or alter their schedules in response to the current situation.
“APTO and PSVWA wish to reassure the travelling public of Barbados that consistent service will not be interrupted by our members. Instead, we encourage all drivers and conductors to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions while performing their duties. We stand in solidarity with the authorities and the community in their efforts to restore safety and security on our island. By working together, we can ensure the well-being of our members, passengers, and the general public.” (CA)
