Australia’s formidable bowling force demonstrated the ruthlessness for which they are famous as they wiped the floor with the West Indies batsmen to win the second Test yesterday on the fourth day and take the series.
The top-quality quartet of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon were joined by rookie Beau Webster as they cruelly exposed the West Indies batting flaws on a ‘sporting pitch’ at the Grenada National Stadium.
After a rain delay, the advertised ‘Sunday Funday’ started on the bright side for the home side, with another heroic bowling effort from the highly impressive Shamar Joseph. Bustling in with purpose the 24-year-old took 4-66 off 16 overs to take his series tally to 14 scalps at an average of just 18.7 per wicket.
This set the stage for a mouth-watering postlunch run chase on a sun-kissed afternoon at the picturesque seaside venue. West Indies were asked to make 277 to win the match and level the series and even though this was a stiff challenge it came as a shock when West Indies capitulated for 143 before the tea break. The home side batters could not cope with the magnitude and their innings lasted a mere 34.3 overs.
This gave the men from Down Under victory by 133 runs and a continued hold on the prestigious Frank Worrell trophy. Therefore Australia’s 30-year stranglehold on the prestigious prize continues.
West Indies surrendered the trophy back in 1995 when Mark Taylor’s team won an epic series in the Caribbean. (PS)
