Badminton glory for Bajan team

It was a proud moment for Shuttlers Badminton Club and Barbados when their five players and officials returned home yesterday after capturing an impressive 11 medals at the Bucaramanga Junior International and Multi-Category tournaments in Colombia.

While it was the first time Barbadians took part in the tournaments, it also proved to be a historical moment as Xian Trotman captured bronze in the international under-19 singles and teamed up with Xavi Haynes to earn another bronze. That saw the duo becoming the first Bajans to make the podium and earn world ranking points in an international tournament for Barbados.

Pint-size Yazmyn Eastmond, who has already made a name for herself in swimming and the cricket ball throw at the National Primary Schools Athletics Championships (NAPSAC), starred in Colombia picking up four medals in the multi-category. The eight-year-old student of Montessori School played up in all of her matches, snatching gold in the under-11 singles for girls.

The highly talented Eastmond won bronze in the under-13 girls’ singles, bronze in the under-11 girls’ doubles with Colombian Gabriella Contreras and bronze in the under-11 mixed doubles with compatriot Liam Clarke. (KB)
