With Nomination Day set for Tuesday, three political hopefuls under the banner of the Bajan Free Party (BFP) officially entered the race for the upcoming general election on February 11 by paying their deposits to the Treasury on Monday morning.
BFP leader Alex Mitchell confirmed he will contest St Michael South, while Sean Wayne Scanterbury is down to run in St Philip South and Marvin Whittaker in St Thomas.
As campaigning continues across the island ahead of the poll, Mitchell described what he said has been a mixed response from voters on the ground.
He said: “A lot of people say they’re not voting. That’s number one. A lot of people say that. You know… that they don’t even care.”
He declared that others have been receptive to the party’s message and are seeking explanations for the country’s current situation.
Turning to issues he said are central to the Bajan Free Party’s platform, Mitchell raised concerns about food security, water quality and public policy.
“Eighty per cent of our food is imported,” he said, alleging that domestic resources were being prioritised for external interests.
Asked what the Bajan Free Party brings to the table, Mitchell pointed to an ambitious housing proposal.
“We’re gonna build 44 100 brand new three-bedroom houses in Barbados, and we’re renting them for $500 each,” he said, adding that the units would range “between 900 and 1000 square feet of housing”.
Mitchell signalled that his party intends to continue raising what it sees as fundamental questions about governance.
“People have to know,” he said, insisting that these issues lie at the heart of why, in his words, “things are not going forward.” (LE)
