Bajan triathlon to welcome all comers

President of the Barbados Federation of Island Triathletes, Garth McIntyre, says the 35th Barbados National Triathlon, set for October 19, will continue to build on its reputation as one of the Caribbean’s most welcoming and competitive multisport events.

The triathlon, which takes place along the Mighty Grynner Highway, will feature a full schedule of races for athletes of all ages and experience levels. McIntyre said the goal was to make the event accessible to everyone.

“We want everyone to feel part of the sport, from seasoned competitors chasing new goals to first-time participants taking on the challenge for the first time,” McIntyre said.

This year’s event includes the Olympic and sprint distances, as well as the Super Sprint “Try-a-Tri” for newcomers. Junior athletes from age 11 and up will also compete in youth categories, and teams will take part in the mixed relay, where each member swims, bikes and runs before tagging the next teammate.

McIntyre noted that the course’s scenic coastal venue and strong community support made it a consistent draw for both local and visiting athletes.

“It’s a course people enjoy coming back to and the energy and encouragement from spectators really add to the experience,” he said.

The National Triathlon remains a highlight of the island’s sporting calendar, combining competition

with community and fitness.

Last year, in the men’s Olympic distance, Oein Josiah captured the top spot with a strong all-round performance, holding off Jason Costelloe of Trinidad and Tobago, who finished second, and Jason Edwards, who claimed third.

On the women’s side, Janelle Clarke continued her fine form, taking first place ahead of Jauharah De Souza and Renae Quinton, who rounded out the podium.

The sprint distance races brought plenty of excitement, with Luke McIntyre powering to victory in the men’s division, followed by Richard Young in second and Luke St John in third.

In the women’s race, Charlotte Bonney of Great Britain showed her international class, taking first place ahead of Remi Soyombo and Leandra Gittens.
