With apparent temperatures around 45C, the Barbados Meteorological Services is advising members of the public to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid direct sunlight during peak hours.
“Hot conditions have been observed across the island over the past few months. These conditions are expected to persist throughout September and into October,” the Met Office said today in a release.
“Daytime maximum temperatures from weather stations across some southern, eastern and northern districts have been peaking between 32C and 33C while some western and urban areas are recording temperatures in the mid-30s and apparent temperatures around 45C.”
Apparent temperature is best described as what it “feels like” on the skin.
“Warmer than average nighttime temperatures are doing very little to relieve this discomfort. While occasional shower activity may bring some temporary relief with moderate breezes from time to time, these high temperatures are expected to persist throughout the remainder of the heat season (September into November).”
The general public, especially vulnerable individuals and outdoor workers, should be prepared for the possibility of severe heat exhaustion, dehydration, heat stroke, or fainting.
A new update from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) today warned of a stronger El Niño system which could persist through December and into February 2027, leading to more temperature extremes.
“Forecasts indicate further strengthening of El Niño in the coming months, with the event forecast to reach very strong intensity before peaking towards the end of the year,” the bulletin said, adding there was no indication of a return to La Niña. (PR/SAT)
