Barbadians traveling to Europe will soon need to provide biometric data

Barbadians planning trips to Europe will soon be required to submit biometric data at the border and apply online for authorisation before departure, under new European Union entry rules set to take effect from October 2025.

According to a government notice, the European Commission will introduce the Entry/Exit System (EES), a digital border management system, on October 12, 2025.

The new system will require non-EU nationals, including Barbadians traveling to the Schengen Area for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, to provide a facial image and four fingerprints at the border.

This biometric data will be securely recorded and stored for three years, replacing the current practice of manual passport stamping.

Full implementation of the EES is expected by April 10, 2026, across 29 European countries.

In addition to the EES, Barbadians and other visa-exempt nationals will also need to obtain a travel authorisation through the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) before visiting 30 European countries.

The ETIAS, which is expected to become operational in the last quarter of 2026, will require travelers to complete an online application at a cost of €20

The authorization will be valid for three years, or until the associated passport expires, whichever comes first. Applicants under 18 or over 70 will be exempt from the fee.

The European Commission has launched a public information campaign to raise awareness of the new systems, offering brochures, infographics and videos for travelers.

Barbadians are encouraged to visit https://travel-europe.europa.eu/pub for more information and guidance on the new requirements.

Officials have stressed that these changes are aimed at making travel to Europe easier and more efficient, but are urging travelers to familiarise themselves with the new rules to avoid any disruptions. (SM)
