With promotion to CONCACAF Nations League B already secured, Kent Hall’s Barbados squad approaches their final fixture with confidence at an all-time high.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference earlier today, alongside forward Khalil Vanderpool-Nurse, Hall reflected on the positive atmosphere within the camp, while emphasising the importance of avoiding overconfidence despite the team’s sharp form in training.
“The mood is really good, confidence is really high, and that’s a real positive for us,” Hall stated. “Our only concern is making sure we don’t turn this confidence into overconfidence, but last night’s training was sharp, so we’re feeling good.”
Barbados’ current three-match winning streak represents the longest competitive run the island has seen in recent years. Their impressive performances have placed them in a strong position ahead of the upcoming CONCACAF Nations League Playoff draw. However, Hall has had to carefully manage his squad, balancing the need to provide opportunities for players while focusing on results. The 45-year-old hinted at potential rotations for the final match, expressing confidence in the depth of his side.
“Managing the squad is always the hardest part of coaching. Every player wants to be on the field, so we try to reward their commitment where possible. At the same time, it’s important to prioritise results. We’re confident in all the players, so we’ll look to rotate the squad where we can,” Hall explained.
Vanderpool-Nurse, eager to secure a starting role in the final fixture, underlined the significance of finishing the campaign on a high, as the team prepares for the next challenge in League B.
“Hopefully, I get the start tomorrow night, but I feel ready. I just want to do my job when I’m on the pitch. This win is really important for us to show we’re ready for League B,” Vanderpool-Nurse said. “Although the team has changed, we’re still together and ready to fight for each other. We’ve built confidence and chemistry, and now it’s coming through in our performances.”
The forward also urged local fans to show their support for the team in the final game, expressing hope for a celebratory finish to the campaign. “I’d love for the public to come out and support us. It would be a great way to end the final game with everyone in the stands, hopefully getting the win and celebrating.”
Reflecting on his development, Vanderpool-Nurse credited his experiences playing abroad for his technical growth, though he acknowledged there is still more to learn. “Playing abroad has helped me a lot technically. The experiences and different levels I’ve been exposed to have been valuable, but I know I still have more to learn.”
Meanwhile, Bahamas captain Lesly St. Fleur is determined to avenge his side’s 3-2 defeat to Barbados in the reverse fixture. Confident that they have corrected their previous mistakes, St. Fleur is optimistic about securing a result this time.
“Moving forward, our game against Barbados is going to be the same way we played against USVI. In the first game, they got the better of us due to mistakes, but this time we’re going to fix those mistakes and hopefully come out with a win,” St. Fleur remarked.
He also dismissed any injury concerns, assuring fans that his team is fully fit and ready to deliver an exciting performance. “There are no injury concerns. We’re fully ready to go, and I think we’ll play a good game tomorrow night for everyone to enjoy.”
Bahamas head coach Nesley Jean echoed St. Fleur’s sentiments, praising his young squad’s commitment but highlighting the need for continued improvement. “I think it’s been fantastic so far. Everyone’s enjoying themselves, and the players are getting to meet new guys. Of course, we can do better – all coaches and players want to improve.”
The Tridents sit comfortably atop the CONCACAF Nations League C, Group A table with nine points from three matches, having scored 11 goals and conceded just two. In contrast, the Bahamas are second with four points from three games, having netted eight times but conceded seven. (JC)
