The Barbados delegation did not walk out of the United Nations General Assembly as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepared to address the gathering last Thursday.
That clarification came today from director of citizen engagement and media relations in the Prime Minister’s Office Roy R. Morris, following reports over the past 48 hours suggesting that Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and the Barbados delegation were among representatives who left the General Assembly Hall ahead of Netanyahu’s speech.
Morris noted that a number of delegations were seen leaving the hall as the Israeli leader was about to speak, but the Barbadian representatives were not among them.
“While it is true that the cameras showed a number of delegations walking out of the hall as Mr Netanyahu was about to speak, the Barbados delegation, including Ms Mottley, remained in place, finalising the speech that the Prime Minister delivered later Thursday afternoon,” he stated.
The clarification follows what Morris described as a number of “news” items appearing in print and video claiming that the Prime Minister and the Barbados delegation had participated in the walkout.
Mottley subsequently delivered Barbados’ address to the General Assembly during Thursday’s afternoon session.
Morris said her address also made Barbados’ position on the conflict in the Middle East clear.
“That address by Prime Minister Mottley spelt out clearly what Barbados’ position is in relation not just to the current war, but the long-standing Arab-Israeli conflict,” he added. (PR/HG)
