Barbados, Guyana to allow ID card travel from July 1

Citizens of Barbados and Guyana will soon be able to travel between the two countries using only national identification cards, under a landmark arrangement announced as both nations prepare to celebrate 60 years of Independence.

The new travel measure takes effect on July 1, 2026, and will allow Barbadian and Guyanese citizens holding valid national ID cards to travel between the countries without needing a passport.

Officials described the arrangement as a major step toward deeper Caribbean integration and closer people-to-people connections between the two countries.

The initiative is expected to make travel easier and more affordable, while strengthening tourism, business travel, cultural exchange, trade and family connections.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley said the arrangement reflects practical regional cooperation that Caribbean citizens can directly benefit from.

β€œThis initiative represents another significant step forward in regional cooperation, south-south collaboration, and people-centred governance,” Mottley said.

β€œAs our two nations mark 60 years of Independence, it is fitting that we take this step together. This is the kind of practical integration that Caribbean people can feel in their daily lives.”

President of Guyana Mohamed Irfaan Ali also welcomed the move, describing it as a symbol of the growing partnership between the two countries.

β€œAs Guyana and Barbados celebrate 60 years of Independence, this initiative symbolises not only the enduring friendship between our nations, but also our shared vision for a more connected, accessible, and united Caribbean community,” he said.

The arrangement was approved through Orders passed by the Cabinets of both countries following collaboration among government officials, regional agencies including CARICOM IMPACS and other stakeholders.

Both governments said further details on implementation procedures, eligibility and travel requirements will be released ahead of the July 1 start date. (PR)
