Barbados will send a strong 18-member team to the 2025 CARIFTA Triathlon, Aquathlon and Mixed Relay Championships, set to take place in Tobago from August 23 to 24.
The Barbados Federation of Island Triathletes (BFIT) announced the full team this week, with senior athletes Luke McIntyre and Alexis Lashley named as captains.
McIntyre, a consistent performer in the region, headlines the boys’ U16-19 lineup alongside Matthew Lashley, Fynn Armstrong and Cain Banfield. Lashley, no stranger to podium finishes, will be joined in the girls’ Under 16-19 category by Isabella Mayers.
The Under 13-15 division features a strong group of young athletes showing plenty of promise. On the girls’ side, Ali Banfield, Laila McIntyre, Victori Bourne, and Tahira Fraser have all earned selection. For the boys, Liam Beckles, Matthew Briggs-Legall, Mekai Riley, Sebastian Clark, Zinzele Renwick-Williams and Zack Gill will don the national colours.
In the youngest age group, Yele Renwick-Williams and Zachary Ladipo will compete in the Under 11-12 Boys’ category.
The championships, which include triathlon, aquathlon and mixed relay events, is one of the premier age-group competitions on the regional calendar and provides a key platform for young athletes to develop and showcase their talent.
All athletes were required to meet strict qualifying standards to earn their spots on the team. For the triathlon events, athletes aged 16-21 had to clock times under 1 hour 12 minutes for males and 1 hour 20 minutes for females. In the 13-15 age group, qualifying times were set at 37:00 minutes for boys and 40:45 minutes for girls, while the Under 11-12 division required boys to go under 22:30 and girls under 24:30.
Aquathlon qualification was equally demanding. Male athletes in the 16-21 bracket had to finish under 33 minutes and females under 36:30. For the 13-15s, the bar was set at 17 minutes for boys and 18:45 for girls. The youngest category, 11-12s, had to beat times of 10:30 for boys and 11:30 for girls.
The management staff comprises coaches Garth McIntyre and Nicholas Beckles, while Kathy-Ann Briggs and Cary Banfield will take up roles as Team Managers. (JC)
