Hurricane Melissa slammed into Jamaica yesterday, leaving a trail of destruction, particularly on the western side of the island.
According to preliminary reports, Montego Bay in St James, along with St Elizabeth and Westmoreland, were hardest hit by the monster hurricane packing winds of 185 miles per hour.
Melissa is the third most intense hurricane recorded in the Caribbean after Wilma in 2005 and Gilbert in 1988.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness declared the nation a “disaster area” yesterday.
In Barbados, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Emergency Management were putting plans in place to offer emergency items and assistance as soon as possible when Jamaica requests help.
