Barbados will host an international summit on artificial intelligence (AI) safety on November 23, bringing together government officials, technology companies, scientists and civil society representatives to discuss global cooperation and access to the technology’s benefits.
The Bridgetown Special Summit on AI Safety will be attended by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
Discussions will focus on how countries can better assess and manage AI risks, strengthen preparedness and ensure communities have a greater role in shaping the technology’s development.
The agenda will cover risk management, inclusion, access, capacity-building, the spread of AI technology, and cultural and linguistic representation.
The summit comes as many countries face the effects of AI systems without having sufficient capacity to assess or influence them.
It will be held alongside the second in-person meeting of the Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence. The panel’s co-chairs requested that the United Nations bring independent experts and AI companies together with the panel to discuss AI safety.
United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy for Digital and Emerging Technologies Amandeep Singh Gill said all countries were exposed to the risks of advanced AI, but few had the capacity to test the systems or respond when problems arose.
Gill said discussions in Bridgetown would examine how countries could develop compatible approaches to evaluating AI risks and build the capacity to conduct that work nationally.
“Safety should not depend on where a country stands on the technology curve, and safety and trust should travel across borders as easily as technology does,” he said.
