The dispute between the Barbados Community College (BCC) and the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) has been settled following conciliatory talks led by the Labour Department.
The standoff stemmed from the College’s decision to hire an individual to a vacant post, prompting industrial action by more than 50 staff members at the Eyrie campus, who called for the appointment to be rescinded.
After three rounds of meetings failed to resolve the issue, the matter was referred to the Chief Labour Officer for mediation.
Principal Annette Alleyne confirmed today that both sides reached an agreement in principle during talks chaired by Acting Chief Labour Officer Allison Elcock.
“Mature discussions allowed appreciation of perspectives from both sides,” Alleyne said. “These talks allowed the BCC to take a much closer look at some of our processes. We will also implement strategies to enhance our social partnership with stakeholders… Above all, the College will be looking forward to the healing process that is critical for us to realise our vision of becoming a world-class centre of excellence.”
She thanked the Labour Department and the union for what she described as open and constructive dialogue.
“We are grateful to the Labour Department for its guidance and to the NUPW for engaging in open and constructive dialogue. This outcome reflects our shared commitment to maintaining a positive and supportive working environment for all students and staff,” she said.
The agreement is expected to strengthen relations between the College and the union and restore calm to the campus after several weeks of tension.
