The Barbados Defence Force’s (BDF) Field Medical Hospital will be deployed to Venezuela in the wake of a series of earthquakes that have crippled sections of the country.
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley made the announcement earlier today during the closing media conference of the 51st Regular Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government on its conclusion in Castries, St Lucia.
Mottley said within the first 48 to 72 hours, Barbados sent people to assist with rescue efforts through the Regional Security System.
“And we have also sent in – Barbados has one of the few certified field hospitals in the region and the Americas,” Mottley said. “We deployed it to Jamaica for three months after Hurricane Melissa.
“We’re now deploying it to Venezuela, because clearly, with the level of injuries and the pressure on the medical system, this is going to be one of the major areas which the Venezuelan people need.”
The decision to set up a Field Medical Hospital came after the BDF deployed a team to Dominica in 201 in the wake of destruction caused by Hurricanes Maria and Irma. The hospital there sustained extensive damage.
It was first accredited as a World Health Organisation Type 1 hospital in September 2019 and that status was subsequently upgraded to Type 2. (SAT)
