BLP’s victory no surprise to St James North

Chad Blackman’s victory in Wednesday’s by-election was by no means a surprise for residents in the constituency of St James North.

An area known as a stronghold of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP), the party has only lost the seat once – in 1986 to Democratic Labour Party (DLP) candidate Joseph Payne.

With such a pedigree, residents told the Weekend Nation they expected a victory for Blackman as soon as the election was sounded.

Roy Thomas, of Trents Tenantry Road, St James, was stunned by the margin of victory, as he never expected Blackman would receive 84 per cent of the votes.
