The Gallery of Caribbean Art proudly presents Boats, Goats & Dancing Ladies: A Caribbean Cacophony, a solo exhibition by Grenadian artist Susan Mains, marking her continued engagement with the gallery, where she has exhibited regularly since 2003.
In this exuberant body of work, Mains paints the Caribbean as a living, breathing symphony. Boats skim turquoise waters, goats wander sunlit hillsides, and dancing women swirl through saturated fields of colour. The sound of the sail flapping in the breeze, the bleat of a goat, (or sheep) and the beat of a drum add wonderfully to the cacophany. Everyday island scenes are transformed into vibrant expressions of rhythm, movement, and communal life, rendered with a confident, expressive brush and an unmistakable sense of joy. “ In this time of world tension, art can give a respite, a moment away to remember the good things all around us” Mains explains.
Beyond her studio practice, Susan Mains has played a significant role in shaping and promoting Caribbean art on the regional and international stage. She was deeply involved in Carifesta in Barbados in August, championing Grenadian artists and helping to bring the nation’s contemporary art into wider Caribbean dialogue. Her commitment to cultural advocacy extends globally through her role as Commissioner of the Grenada Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, a position she has held for the ninth time, leading Grenada’s presence at one of the world’s most prestigious art events.
Boats, Goats & Dancing Ladies: A Caribbean Cacophony celebrates both the painterly vitality of Mains’ work and her longstanding dedication to Caribbean cultural exchange — an invitation to experience the islands through colour, memory, and movement. In Grenada, you can find her work at the Susan Mains Gallery at Spiceland Mall, or Art House 473 in Calliste.
The exhibition continues through 5th February, and is open from 10 am to 4 pm daily. Free entrance.
