Boyce condemns attacks as acts of terrorism

Commissioner of Police Richard Boyce said they are hot on the trail of the men who killed 24-year-old Gavin Nicholas Archer and terrorised Nelson Street on Sunday.

During a media conference at police headquarters on Roebuck Street in the City, Boyce said that, although it was still early days, they were confident.

“We are in the early stages of our investigations. As you would know, there are a number of videos out there that show two motorcycles and persons on them. And we, from our investigations and our intelligence, are on the right track where this is concerned. So we would follow intelligence, follow the leads and take the appropriate actions as we go forward,” he said.

On Sunday, four men on two motorcycles shot up Nelson Street and Wellington Street, damaging cars and houses. The men then drove to St Stephen’s Hill and White Hall, St Michael, injuring both Archer, who later died, and another man.

Boyce labelled the shootings as “barbaric acts of terrorism” and pledged to leave no stone unturned in addressing Barbados’ rising crime rate.

“The criminal element is banding together, and their actions are creating tremendous fear in the country. Not only that, multiple persons stand in breach of being impacted negatively, whether it is death, serious injury or even buildings and other premises being destroyed. Their actions are akin to what happens when terrorists operate in other lands, so we have to be mindful of those things that can occur and treat them as though we are up against terrorists, because they operate with no regard whatsoever for the life and property and safety of the country.

“These events represent a coordinated attack on public order. Such atrocities will not be tolerated. The Barbados Police Service, in collaboration with the Barbados Defence Force and all national security and supporting agencies, will employ every lawful measure to identify and dismantle these criminal networks. We will use our full collective resources to defeat these thugs, gangsters, and all those who willingly support their criminal conduct,” he said. (CA)
