ALL HAIL Bryden Stokes Limited!
The newly crowned kings of the Charles Belle TMR Sales and Service Foot-a-Rama Competition
enjoyed an unforgettable debut in the inter-company tournament and went the full distance with a 1-0 victory over hosts, TMR Sales and Service.
Played over the weekend at the Barbados Football Association’sTechnical Centre in Wildey, the third edition of the competition brought lots of thrills, jaw-dropping moments, and excitement, as Bryden Stokes, coached by one of Barbados’ top strikers Riviere Williams, could not be denied, thanks to the lone goal scored by Ramon Griffith with a brilliant header.
“During the finals, we tried to keep our spirits high because we knew that TMR would have tired legs, and we tried to keep heavy rotation to keep the tempo up, and I told the guys we could catch them on the counterattack, which unfortunately we did not capitalise on those tactics. However, we were a threat from set plays all tournament, and it finally paid off in the finals,” Williams told MIDWEEK SPORT.
A former Weymouth Wales champion player, and also an employee at Bryden Stokes Limited, Williams said he was “very ecstatic” with the success of his players.
“As I told them, we may not have the best individual players, but if we stick together as a team, we most definitely could pull it off. So said, so done.”
Similar to the finals, Bryden Stokes snatched a 1-0 win over Scotiabank in the semi-finals. This time, Gerard Murray produced the winner. Each game lasted 30 minutes, with 15 minutes a half, filled with lots of speed, tackles, and energetic plays.
Last year’s champions, Hipac Limited, were knocked out in the first round, making room for Bryden Stokes to take over as new champions.
Losing just one game during the first round of the tournament against GCG, whom Williams acknowledged as a very strong side, Bryden Stokes were able to regroup and bounce back from that defeat to lift the trophy, even though they had a few players missing due to work commitments.
“Truth is, the guys lifted their spirits high, and we did well,” Williams added.
With a supportive crowd behind them this year, Williams said Bryden Stokes were already looking forward to defending their title next year. He also thanked TMR Sales and Service for putting on what he described as a great tournament.
“I thought it was a well put together event. Give thanks to the TMR management and staff for putting on a well-organised event, and we look forward to participating and defending our title next year.” (ML)
