Car Barbados launches new electric and hybrid models amid rising fuel costs

With fuel prices rising due to the conflict in Iran, Car Barbados is offering Barbadians an electric option that could reduce running costs.

The dealership has expanded its lineup with the launch of two new KGM models, a move described as a “significant step” in the company’s push for sustainable transportation on the island.

During the unveiling event on Saturday, General Manager Chris Haywood introduced the Acteon, a hybrid SUV, alongside a fully electric version of the Musso pickup truck.

Addressing concerns about the truck’s suitability for local terrain, Haywood said, “These vehicles are built for basically Australian conditions, so I don’t foresee any issues with their durability and our terrain or Barbados.”

The shift toward electric mobility is being driven largely by operational efficiency, with the company reporting a significant reduction in running costs.

“Basically, the cost to operate a fully electric vehicle versus your conventional ICE or internal combustion engine vehicle is about a 75 per cent reduction in running costs,” said Haywood, who attributed the dealership’s local success to a strong focus on customer experience and word-of-mouth reputation.

“We incorporate a service package with all of your vehicles so basically you don’t pay for service for five years,” he added, emphasising that the dealership strives to be “a happy, it’s a fun place to be, it’s like a family.”
