CBLP criticises government over crime, economic decisions

The Conservative Barbados Leadership Party (CBLP) has raised alarm over what it describes as the Government’s failure to address rising crime and worsening economic conditions, accusing key officials of neglecting their responsibilities at a critical time.

In a statement issued on Friday, CBLP President Corey H.D. Beckles said the country is at a “tipping point,” and criticised the Attorney General and Minister responsible for crime for participating in a police parade while violent incidents continue to affect communities across the island.

“This sends a strong message that there is no need for our leaders to inspire public confidence that they are doing everything that is necessary to stop the surge of crime and violence in this country,” the party stated.

The CBLP also questioned the Government’s handling of the economy, particularly in light of the rising cost of living and a recent land deal involving Jemmotts Lane. The party said it was concerned that prime land was given to a bank which had “recently suffered a downgrade that now brings its credit rating just above junk status”.

“The fact that our leaders see it fit not to address the elephant in the room concerning our relationship with the Afreximbank sends a strong message,” the release added.

Beckles accused the administration of being “insulated” by past electoral victories and failing to hold itself accountable to the public.

“We are faced with leaders who are so insulated by the results of the last two general elections and the results of the last by-election that they are willing to ignore the current state of affairs in Barbados by partying in the streets and making decisions that affect the social and economic future of our people, without any accountability whatsoever.”

The party has called on Barbadians to reject what it views as complacency in leadership and to demand action and accountability on matters of crime, safety, and national development.
