A Barbadian Choir celebrating 30 years since its formation has opted to tour southern England and perform its extensive repertoire.
For three decades, the harmonious tapestry woven by the Celestial Voices Choir has uplifted audiences across continents, blending tradition with innovation in every note.
The concerts span classical music, spirituals, and music from Broadway shows, culminating with a distinctive blend of music from the Caribbean, including folk songs and contemporary music.
The choir will start its inaugural tour with a concert at Greyfriars Church in Reading Town Centre, and promises that its diverse range will raise the roof of this splendid auditorium.
Reading is well known for its diversity, with 46.5 per cent of the population belonging to a Black and minority ethnic community. The town has one of the largest Barbadian groups in the United Kingdom, and is twinned with Speightstown, Barbados.
This interdenominational Barbadian group was formed in 1994 by Andrew Hall, the organist and choirmaster of St Stephen’s Anglican Church in Black Rock, Barbados.
As amateur musicians the members began their journey with a shared passion for music and a commitment to using their voices as instruments of harmony and spiritual reflection. Through numerous rehearsals, exceptional performances, and meaningful collaborations, they have evolved into a cohesive unit and a symbol of musical excellence of which Barbadians can be proud.
Over the last year, Celestial Voices has raised funds by performing across the island, hosting fish fries, concerts and raffles, among many other activities, to enable the 40 voices-strong group to afford the cost of their holiday tour.
The choir has been touring globally, during their summer holidays, since 1994 and has performed numerous
times across Canada and the United States – with numerous concerts in Brooklyn and Queens, New York – and ministered in Grenada and Trinidad.
As it marks this significant milestone, choir director Hall said: “We reflect not only on our rich history but also on the horizons yet to be explored. Each anniversary invites us to honour our roots while seeking fresh inspiration, reaching new audiences, and forging connections through our shared language of song. This year, we stand on the threshold of new adventures, ready to share the depth and diversity of our repertoire beyond familiar shores.”
The group will continue their musical journey by performing in Romford, Bedford, and London, Kennington.
