Christ Church hails everyday heroes as Pride of Barbados

Some 40 residents of Christ Church whose quiet determination has shaped their communities for decades took the spotlight at State House on Wednesday.

Another three persons from the diaspora who resided in the parish were also recognised. The awardees were among the recipients on the We Gatherin’ 2025 Honours List, and received their award from President of Barbados Dame Sandra Mason, during two separate ceremonies.

The Pride of Barbados Awards, which was also attended by Members of Parliament for Christ Church,, paid tribute to men and women whose selfless contributions have strengthened parish life through education, mentorship, youth development, sport and humanitarian service.

During the second ceremony, Patricia St Elmo Auntie Pat Linton was honoured for more than thirty years as a devoted community leader in Wotton Terrace and as a Salvation Army officer, community organiser and humanitarian. From assisting sanitation workers to providing free breakfasts for early morning commuters, her acts of kindness have contributed to the social and spiritual development of her community. “It’s been an honour to serve,” she said after receiving her award. “Through the Salvation Army, we simply do what we can, when we can. The more we help, the stronger our community becomes.”

Shelton Perkins, a distinguished educator, elder emeritus and artistic director, was recognised for leadership in education and mentoring young people in the church and through the arts. “It’s an unexpected honour,” he said. “I’ve always believed my mission is to help people move from one state to a better one. Whether in education, music or sports, it’s about lifting others.”

Eardley Selwyn Yarde, received recognition for his advocacy, mentorship and dedication to youth and community development in Parish Land and Fairy Valley. “The baton was passed to me, and I just kept running,” he said. “I felt it was the right thing to do — to encourage others, the same way I was encouraged growing up.”

Addressing the awardees, Senior Minister Dr William Duguid, MP for Christ Church West, praised their compassion and consistency. “It is obvious that we see ordinary people doing extraordinary things,” he said. “We salute you and thank you for the tremendous job you’ve done over the years, forty years and some more than forty. So, we look forward to your continued success and being beacons for Christ Church.”

Home Affairs Minister Wilfred Abrahams, MP for Christ Church East, echoed those sentiments, reflecting on how genuine service leaves a lasting impact. “You never know who you’re going to impact with the things you do,” he said. “A hug, a pat on the back, an upliftment of a young person can help them way way down in their life. You are those persons chosen from Christ Church.”

Minister of Finance Ryan Straughn, the MP for Christ Church East Central, also commended the honourees, describing their work as the glue holding the social fabric intact. “In a time when our world can feel detached and social media–driven, we need more of what you have done,” he said. “You’ve shown that service, kindness and integrity still matter. You are inspiring many young people — often without even realising it.”
