One man was reportedly killed, and a police officer injured during a shooting incident yesterday in The City.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. near the corner of Fairchild Street and Bay Street. There was no official statement from the police up to Press time; however, an eyewitness spoke of what he experienced.
“I was sitting, using the public Wi-Fi, when I hear this sound; I thought it was a tyre bursting or something. When I look up, I see a police jeep in the corner parked and then I see a lot of scuffling, then heard more shots.
“It all happened so fast, within five minutes. Then I see all the crowd run down, and then the police arrived and started to clear the area,” he said.
In the end one man’s body was on the ground while an officer was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, police sources confirmed.
Police officers were redirecting traffic from the area, which caused some traffic congestion along Bay Street and in The City.
Crowds of people gathered across the street to get a glimpse, but the entire road was blocked off, and in the gathering evening gloom, visibility was low.
Police later said one man was arrested in connection with an assault against a female. The male was seen and identified by the female and while he was being transported in the police motor vehicle, he attempted to disarm the officer by pulling his firearm. A struggle ensued resulting in the police officer being shot.
The culprit also received gunshot injuries and succumbed to them at the scene. A medical doctor pronounced death.
The police officer was transported in a police vehicle to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he underwent medical treatment. (CA/SAT)
