A Clapham, Christ Church man accused of unlawfully wounding another man was remanded to Dodds Prison after the court heard that the complainant had previously made several police reports against him.
Marlon Damien Weekes, a 42-year-old general worker, appeared before Magistrate Manila Renee in the No. 2 District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court, accused that on December 18 he unlawfully wounded Norman Knight with intent to maim, disfigure or disable him, or to do some other serious bodily harm to Knight.
The charge is indictable, and no plea was taken.
Prosecutor Police Constable Troy Tudor objected to bail on several grounds, including the strength of the evidence; the fear that the accused would intimidate or influence witnesses; that the complainant had been hospitalised after receiving a number of injuries; the fear that Knight’s safety might be jeopardised if the accused was released as the two were neighbours; that the accused was on bail for an assault matter in another court; and the prevalence of such offences in society.
“The complainant would have made numerous calls to the police about the defendant before the (alleged) incident,” the prosecuting constable said.
Weekes denied ever receiving any notices from the police regarding the complainant.
But a police sergeant told the court that he had responded to one of those calls and found the accused intoxicated and sleeping on top of a vehicle with a pair of scissors in his hand.
“Apparently, he drinks a lot, and I took the scissors from him, and he did not even know,” Sergeant Osbourne said.
Noting that the accused’s previous conviction, while dated, was for possession of an offensive weapon, Magistrate Manila Renee remanded Weekes until January 20.
