Two route taxi employees who confessed to beating a man on Monday will be sentenced on September 23.
Dario Jamar Cheltenham, 33, of Phillips Road, St Stephen’s Hill, Black Rock, St Michael, and Jerad Ondre Brathwaite, 29, of Brereton Village, St Philip, admitted to Magistrate Jared Richards yesterday that they unlawfully assaulted Paul Rollins on September 14.
Additionally, Brathwaite pleaded guilty to intentionally damaging Rollins’ cell phone, or being reckless as to whether it would be damaged, on that same date.
Constable Troy Tudor, who gave the details of the incident to the District “A” Traffic Court, said Rollins was walking along Eagle Hall Main Road, St Michael, when he saw minibus B23 driving slowly and obstructing traffic. He noticed Cheltenham, the conductor, got out of the vehicle and walked towards Mapp’s Rotisserie.
The complainant stopped in the area of Crumbz Bakery and started to record the route taxis, as other motorists became agitated. Brathwaite brought the vehicle to a stop, got out, and ran toward Rollins without any provocation.
When he recognised Brathwaite was the driver, Rollins turned and started running towards the traffic lights at Eagle Hall. Brathwaite then shouted to Cheltenham: “Come conductor; come, come.”
The driver caught up with Rollins, held on to his neck and forced him on the ground. Cheltenham came over, joined him and both men started kicking Rollins. Brathwaite then took Rollins’ cellular phone from him, deleted the videos he had recorded and threw the device to the ground, damaging the screen protector.
Both Cheltenham and Brathwaite ran back to their vehicle and drove from the area.
Brathwaite was granted $1 000 bail and Cheltenham $500, until September 23 when they return to court for sentencing. (SD)
