Customs officer charged with soliciting funds

A Customs officer accused of soliciting money from a man at the airport last month for some items he imported, was placed on bail yesterday.

Fadesha Fiann Howard, 24, of Parris Hill, St Joseph, was not required to plead to the charge of soliciting $300 from Kyle Haynes on May 26, while attached to the C shift of the Customs and Excise Department at Grantley Adams International Airport, as a reward for him not paying the requisite duties for goods he imported.

She is also accused that being a Customs officer, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse, she engaged in wilful misconduct which amounted to an abuse of trust by failing to make an entry in the Customs receipt book, having charged Haynes $300 as duties, also on May 26.

She appeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick in the District “F” Magistrates’

Court at the Eric Holder Jr Municipal Complex, Horse Hill, St Joseph.

He set bail at $5 000 and ordered her to return to the same court on August 20.

Howard was represented by King’s Counsel Michael Lashley and attorney Suthany Hall.
