Deacons folk see jobs as exit from violence

The people of the Deacons community are calling for jobs and opportunities for young people after a daylight shooting on Monday left a sense of uneasy calm a day later.

Residents, while visibly shaken by the sudden eruption of violence, describe a neighbourhood attempting to move forward despite lingering concerns about safety and the broader socio‑economic challenges facing local youth.

For many living in the Deacons Farm, the shooting, in which two people were hurt, served as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of violence today.

In a series of Barbados TODAY interviews, some residents, such as Adrian Williams, who has lived in Deacons for 66 years, described an immediate return to daily routines. “It’s back to normal,” Williams said. “People get accustomed to the chores. They go to the shop. It ain’t stopping the people.”

But this “normality” is not necessarily a sign of indifference but rather a coping mechanism at a time when, some residents noted, gun violence has become a recurring headline in communities across the world.

When asked what the community truly needs to feel secure and thrive, Williams said that the lack of legitimate economic opportunity is the primary driver of the problems facing the neighbourhood.

“All this neighbourhood needs is for some of the young people to get some employment. If they can have money in their pockets, they can take care of their basic needs. I don’t think all the problems will be solved, but some of them would be.”

Others expressed a more visceral reaction to the event. For many, the brazen nature of the attack – which took place in broad daylight while residents were going about their business – has left a lingering sense of vulnerability.

Another resident said: “It makes you more fearful to come out, to walk around, and to do stuff, you know a life can be lost just by exiting your house to go next door to your neighbour, or even just exiting your car after work.”

This sentiment was echoed by younger voices in the community, who urged their peers to seek out vocational training and proactive pathways, even when home environments or local circumstances are difficult.

There was a strong desire for young people to “do better” and to find mentors who can help them navigate the challenges of the modern world. The residents stressed that while they hope for a more peaceful environment, the structural issue of youth unemployment remains the “elephant in the room”.

Some offered mixed reactions regarding law enforcement. While police patrols are generally welcomed and seen as necessary, there is a pragmatic acknowledgment of their limitations.

“Security for this neighbourhood will be a challenge,” one resident explained, noting the community’s layout. “It’s a very open place, and entrances are coming from a lot of different directions.”

Another resident pointed out that the police cannot be everywhere at once. The “window of opportunity” for incidents to occur despite patrols is a reality they have come to accept with a mixture of resignation and vigilance.

Many believe that the solution lies less in a heavier police presence and more in a combination of long‑term community development and residents themselves choosing to “keep to themselves and stay quiet”.

Most people noted that while the culture has evolved over the decades – with older residents recalling a time when the area felt vastly different – there remains a core of law‑abiding, highly respected citizens dedicated to their families and their homes.

As the community moves past the shock of Monday’s events, residents said their hope was that attention will shift from the violence itself towards creating a future where young people are given the tools to thrive rather than being caught in the crossfire.
