Death toll rises to 41 in Guyana boat tragedy

The death toll in Guyana’s boat tragedy has risen to 41 as search and recovery operations continue.

In an update issued this afternoon, the Government of Guyana said 77 people have been rescued, while 41 bodies have now been recovered.

The first recovery for the day was made at 10:15 a.m., with 14 bodies retrieved by 1 p.m.

Search efforts have been intensified, with 16 vessels deployed in the wreckage area. Authorities have also expanded the designated search zone by an additional 400 square miles, extending to Waini Point, in an effort to locate any remaining persons.

French and local divers continue underwater search and recovery operations at the wreckage site.

The identification of recovered bodies is being carried out by family members at Suddie Hospital, while all bodies recovered during the operation are being transferred to the custody of the Guyana Police Force at the established facility at Charity River Dam. (PR)
