As the world marked yet another Palm Sunday, Barbados welcomed a new member to the revered group of centenarians.
Muriel Dilworth celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends at her Mapp Hill, St Michael, home. She also received a special visit from President Jeffrey Bostic, to which she was visibly pleased.
The centenarian is the last of three siblings and spent a significant portion of her adult life in the United States.
Although she had no children, her cousins and nieces reminisced about how she was just as present in their lives as their parents.
Her niece, Robin Wilson-Tolbert, delivered a tribute at the celebration, expressing admiration for her aunt’s artistic talent, fashion sense and meticulous nature.
Wilson-Tolbert recalled her aunt bringing Barbadian culture to them in the US during the holidays, introducing them to traditional foods and dances.
“I think of the culture you brought to us. Every Christmas, as we were all freezing cold in Boston, there would be a box sent from your sisters that would have the latest calypso albums and some black rum cake, and we would push back all the furniture and dance all evening. You brought that culture to us, and we’ll never forget that.”
She also expressed thanks to her aunt for her love and support and for always being present during the most important moments in their lives.
Nicole Stark, another cousin, shared personal memories of the centenarian’s constant presence at special events.
“You were there for everything, all of my graduations, my concerts, everything. You came there to cheer us on, and so I’m just so grateful for you. You are such a blessing to all of us, and I’m so grateful for you.”
Another cousin, Shirley Woodroff, reminisced about their childhood together and the times they travelled.
She shared wishes of health and longevity: “I ask God that He may continue to keep you in strength and you to be able to sit up. You love nature, you love your garden… May God continue to bless and guard and keep you safe.”
The President gifted her a bouquet, a bottle of wine and a card, which he read: “Reaching the remarkable age of 100 years makes you a national treasure. It is cause for celebration, and so I, the President of Barbados, salute you this morning. I salute you. Accept my heartfelt congratulations, and those of the people of Barbados, on this most significant day in your life.”
He then led the singing of the birthday song for the centenarian before leaving the family to continue their celebration privately.
