DLP: Urgent steps needed for school transportation safety

The Democratic Labour Party (DLP) is calling for urgent steps to improve school transportation safety following Monday’s accident outside the Lester Vaughn School that left several students injured.
Police said 25 students and the driver were hurt when an off-route ZR minibus overturned outside the Cane Garden campus on Monday morning.
In a statement issued by DLP spokesperson on education Felicia Dujon, the party described the incident as a “wake-up call” for the authorities to act decisively.
“This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for improved transportation safety and the provision of adequate resources for our students. The Democratic Labour Party has repeatedly called on the Government, particularly the Minister of Education, to provide additional buses to ensure the safe transport of our students.”
She said those calls have not been treated with the urgency they deserve and urged the administration to make student safety a national priority.
“This accident should serve as a wake-up call to the authorities to prioritise the safety and well-being of our children,” Dujon added. “We urge immediate action to prevent further incidents and to safeguard the lives of our students.”
Dujon also extended best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured and encouraged that both students and teachers receive the counselling and support needed to recover from the ordeal.
“We hope that those affected can receive the counselling and support required to cope with this traumatic experience,” she said.
