A St Thomas motorist has been fined $15 000 and handed a suspended prison term in the High Court for causing the death of a Christ Church man in a dangerous-driving crash on Cox Road more than five years ago.
Shawn Athelston Whittaker of Bedford Way, Arthur’s Seat, St Thomas, was found guilty last November of causing the death of Richard Griffith, formerly of Frere Pilgrim, by driving his vehicle on Cox Road, Christ Church, in a manner dangerous to the public on September 19, 2020.
Justice Christopher Birch reached a two-year starting point and deducted 12 months for the delay in the matter reaching trial. He sentenced Whittaker to 12 months in prison but suspended this for nine months.
Fining him $15 000 for the offence, $5 000 of which was immediately due, the judge ordered him to settle the remainder in seven months. Failure to do so will result in the suspended sentence being activated.
Principal State Counsel Romario Straker and State Counsel Eleazar Williams prosecuted, while defence lawyer Faith Greaves represented Whittaker along with attorney Kelly-Ann Blackman.
