The Ministry of Educational Transformation has expressed ‘deep regret’ over a recent incident involving students in school uniform and parental figures, which was widely circulated on social media.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the ministry said it views any public display of aggression—particularly those involving young people and the adults entrusted with their care—as a serious matter that undermines the values of respect, discipline, and responsible citizenship that the education system seeks to instil.
The public was reminded that schools in Barbados operate under a strict zero-tolerance policy for violence, whether such incidents occur on or off school premises. As such, the ministry stated that the matter will be addressed with the full weight of its established protocols, as acts of aggression compromise the safety and well-being of school communities.
At the same time, the principal, deputy principal and teachers of the affected school were commended for their immediate and professional response.
“Their leadership ensured that all available resources—including guidance counsellors, support staff, and relevant external agencies—were activated to address the issue promptly and worked toward a productive and constructive resolution.
“Their actions reflect a commitment not only to resolving the present matter but also to implementing preventative measures that reduce the likelihood of similar occurrences in the future.”
With this in mind, the ministry pledged its unwavering support for the principal and her leadership team, stating they continue to act in the best interests of their students, staff, and the wider school community.
“We recognise the emotional and operational challenge that situations of this nature place on school leadership, and we applaud their calm, consistent and student-centred approach.”
The ministry also appealed for stronger partnership and cooperation between parents, guardians, and school personnel, noting that the task of shaping responsible, resilient, and socially aware citizens cannot rest on the shoulders of schools alone.
“It requires a united effort grounded in Barbados’ value system of mutual respect, open communication, and shared accountability. Parents and schools must work collaboratively to reinforce positive behaviours, address concerns as they present themselves in a timely fashion, and support every child’s development both at home and at school.”
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safe learning environments for all students across Barbados, adding that it will continue to monitor the situation closely, provide guidance where needed, and uphold policies that safeguard the well-being of the nation’s children. (PR/BT)
