Flash-flood watch extended for island

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has extended the flash-flood watch for the island as unsettled weather continues to affect the country into Monday night.

The update, issued at 5:30 p.m. today, comes after parts of the island recorded up to three inches of rainfall throughout the day. Although there was a lull in activity during the afternoon, forecasters warn that occasional showers are likely to continue overnight. These, combined with already saturated ground conditions, could trigger flooding—particularly in low-lying and flood-prone districts.

Residents and road users are urged to remain cautious, as runoff from higher elevations, soil erosion, and water pooling on roads and fields remain possible. Fast-moving water may also carry debris from elevated areas, posing hazards to motorists and pedestrians alike.

Traffic delays and impassable roads could result as the unstable conditions persist. The public is strongly advised to follow guidance from the Department of Emergency Management and to monitor updates from official sources such as the BMS, DEM, GIS, and local media platforms.

The flash-flood watch will now remain in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2025, unless it is terminated earlier if conditions improve. (BMS)
