Flash-flood watch in effect across Barbados

A flash-flood watch is now in effect for Barbados as pockets of moderate to heavy showers are forecast to affect the island throughout the day.

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) said the watch has been extended islandwide due to ongoing unstable weather conditions, with further rainfall accumulations of one to two inches possible.

Possible impacts include water settling on roads and fields, which could cause commuting delays and isolated diversions, rising water levels in ponds and other water bodies, and minor flooding of roads, drains and low-lying properties. Some soil erosion is also possible, particularly in areas with exposed land. Officials cautioned that the alert level could be upgraded to red if conditions worsen.

The unsettled weather follows overnight moderate to heavy showers, mainly over southern Barbados, triggered by surface to mid-level instability and an upper-level jet stream.

Residents and visitors are urged to monitor updates from the BMS, the Department of Emergency Management (DEM), the Barbados Government Information Service (GIS), and local media.

The flash-flood watch, issued at 6 a.m. today, remains in effect until 6 p.m. or sooner if conditions change.
