Flash flood watch in effect for Barbados

Barbados is currently experiencing heavy showers accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, with conditions expected to persist throughout the day.

Morning rainfall has already resulted in accumulations of up to one inch in some isolated areas.

According to the Barbados Meteorological Service (BMS), a shear line affecting the island triggered light to heavy rainfall, along with intermittent thunderstorms, this morning.

“Throughout the late morning into afternoon, the shear line can bring a further one to two inches of rainfall across the island,” the BMS stated.

As a result, a flash flood watch is in effect until 6 p.m. today. The alert level may be elevated to red or terminated earlier if conditions improve, the BMS said.

Residents and visitors are urged to remain on alert for the following possible impacts:

Runoff from higher elevations
Soil erosion on exposed or recently disturbed land surfaces
Water pooling on roads and fields, particularly near the foot of hills and along coastal routes
Debris from elevated areas being carried by fast-moving water
Traffic delays, with some roads potentially becoming impassable
