Flash flood watch in effect for parts of the island

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has placed northwestern, western and northern districts under a flash flood watch.

β€œA trough system is affecting the island, and rainfall accumulations between 1 and 2 inches, in moderate to heavy showers, are likely across northwestern, western and northern districts,” the BMS reported.

As a result, residents are being told to expect possible, moderate to significant soil erosion on bared or scarred land surfaces; water settlements on roads and fields, which may lead to commuting delays and possible isolated diversions in and out of the City; and marginally invasive excess water on roads, fields, storm drains/water canals and property.Β

The BMS says residents and visitors should also be aware that this alert level could elevate to red (warning) at short notice.

A flash-flood watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. β€œIt does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.”

This alert message is valid from 10 a.m. Friday,Β  February 23, and will be terminated at 6 p.m. or sooner if conditions warrant, the BMS said.Β
