Flash Flood Watch issued for this afternoon

The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the island.

This warning comes as additional rainfall throughout the day is expected to exacerbate the already saturated environment, potentially leading to flooding in various parts of the island.

A shearline continues to affect Barbados this afternoon, bringing the possibility of heavy to intense showers and thunderstorms.

Forecasts predict additional rainfall accumulations of approximately 25 mm. With the soil already saturated, this rainfall could result in pockets of flooding across the island, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Residents are urged to be cautious of potential runoff from higher elevations, soil erosion, and possible land slippage on exposed or scarred land surfaces. Flooding may also affect roads and fields, and adjustments to water levels in ponds and other water bodies are expected. The potential for debris from higher elevations becoming embedded in fast-moving water flows could create additional hazards. Traffic delays are likely, with some roads possibly becoming impassable.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are favourable for flash flooding to occur within the watch area, though it does not guarantee that flooding will happen.

This watch will remain in effect until 6:00 p.m. today, or sooner if conditions improve.
